Thompson Automotive Labs

We created a program that when used with an oscillioscope detects inefficient combustion.

"Not only did Rolemodel create this software, but through RoleModel Community, was also able to work with a business consultant, graphic and web designer. It was very nice to have all these options at one place!"

Employment

If you are looking for a job, you've come to the wrong place.

If you think that the best way to find a job is to put a general cover letter together telling us why you'll be an asset to our organization (even though you don't know the first thing about our organization) attaching your resume with as many buzzwords as you can legitimately include, please don't waste your time.  It will be thrown in the trash.

On the other hand, if you really want to be excellent at your craft and desire to serve others with your increasing skills that you gain as you work side by side with others, we'd be happy to consider working with you.

If you are willing to have a variable pay scale, sharing the risk and reward as opportunities arise, we'd really love to talk to you.  (We don't have a corporate health insurance policy, disability insurance, 401K, or other "standard corporate benefits". We expect individuals will decide how to invest their income and balance the perceived risks in their lives in a way that suits them.  And, we are more than happy to share what we've learned and done as individuals about such "risk management").

But, either way you need to know that before we hire you, we'll want to work side-by-side with you for a short period of time (no less than a half-day, and preferrably several days) to make sure you'll fit in our environment before we offer your services as part of our team to one of our valuable clients.  That requires an investment of time on both of our parts.  We prefer to get to get to know your family, and hopefully have you get to learn a little about some of ours.  If you are coming from out of town, that would probably include staying in one or more of our homes.  If you are alreadly local, maybe we'll share a meal or two together.  If we are going to be spending a chunk of our lives with you, we want to make sure both of us know a little bit about what we're getting into.  If you were hoping for a brief interview and a job offer, that's probably not going to happen here.

The RoleModel Software team is a group of individuals who desire to work in a highly collaborative, intergenerational environment (because we think its the best way to live and work) to produce value for our clients.  Since we work in a manner that is so different from the typical corporate job, you may not be ready for us.  This is an environment where you have to be ready to be humble (or humbled) everyday because you will be working closely with others and they'll see everything you do that isn't perfect.  You may be able to hide it for an hour or two, but no longer than that.  If you are not ready to learn from each other (both those who are younger and less experienced than you, as well as those who are older and more accomplished than you... and the really humbling experience of working with those who are younger and more accomplished than you) on a daily basis, you are not going to like it here.

Suppose you are one of the unique individuals who reads the above and says, "this is too good to be true.  It sounds like what I've been looking for all of my life."  Or, more potentially, "this sounds really intriguing.  I'm not sure if it's for me, but I'd like to find out more."

Well, working here is not really paradise.  Don't get us wrong, we really like working here and prefer it to just about any other place most of us have ever worked.  But, we're not perfect, and our clients aren't perfect.  We have to deal with real, imperfect people every day.  Every so often, you'll be on a project that isn't a constant stream of exciting challenges with the imminent result being some new invention that will revolutionize life as we know it. OK, chances are you will never be on a project like that, though we almost always have projects that will change some important aspect of life (for the better) for someone who will use it.  We may not be inventing the best thing since sliced bread every day, but we don't like to accept the status quo.  That's why we do custom software development.  We work on projects that attempt to produce something different than whatever else is out there (even though some of it will look somewhat like other stuff that is out there) and do it in a way that can grow and change as our clients learn and grow.  There is always room for improvement, and we strive to fill that room.

OK, by now you should be convinced we're not just looking for a person with a resume to fill a slot.  We hire people, not commodities.  We don't expect everyone to be just like one of us - but we do expect people not to be "like everyone else."  But you are probably still wondering what kind of people we are looking for.

Generally speaking, we are always interested in talking to two kinds of people:

  1. Skilled individuals with character who view their work in the software arena as a craft, and who can be productive members of our high-performance team quickly. These people need to communicate well, have object technology and/or agile development experience, have a strong desire to be part of a team, and generally be willing to share risk and reward (how much is up to negotiation and also determined by individual project opportunities).

  2. Less skilled (perhaps) individuals with character who are interested in apprenticeship in the software development arena at various levels in order to develop into productive members of our high-performance team. Find out more about our apprenticeship model here.

To be considered to be a part of our community, feel free to email us at jobs@rolemodelsoftware.com or apprenticeship@rolemodelsoftware.com with answers to our pre-interview questions below. We are unapologetically picky, and our interview process takes a good while, but we try to make it rewarding for everybody involved.  We expect that our interview process will make you think and challenge you to look at life a little differently.

Pre-Interview Questions

If you believe you are the kind of skilled candidate we are looking for, please send answers to the following questions (after you've read a little more about us, please) in your e-mail:

  1. What have you done up to this point to prepare you to be part of the RoleModel team, and why should we consider you versus other candidates?
  2. Why RoleModel?  Why wouldn't you rather have a secure job?
  3. What do you think you can contribute?
  4. What are you expecting to gain?
  5. What are the biggest questions you have for us?

If you are interested in apprenticeship (after you've read a little more about us and our apprenticeship approach), please send answers to the following questions in your email:

  1. What type of apprenticeship are you interested in and why apprenticeship versus a traditional education model?
  2. When might you be available to begin?  What are the best means and times to contact you? (please include a phone number)
  3. What have you done up to this point to prepare for apprenticeship, and why should we consider you versus other candidates?
  4. Are you willing to pay us, in money or service for the opportunity to apprentice here?  If not, can you justify the value you will provide versus the distraction you will be early on?

Thank you for your interest. If you've made it this far and are excited about the possibilities, we look forward to hearing from you.
